About Punjab Health and Family Welfare Department

A Vision for Health and Well-being in Punjab

The Constitution of India lays the foundation for a just and equal society where every individual enjoys freedom, dignity, and access to basic needs. One of its key goals is to eliminate poverty, ignorance, and ill-health, while guiding the State to improve nutrition, raise living standards, and ensure the health and strength of its people—especially children—so they can grow up healthy and strong.

In line with this vision and the national commitment to “Health for All,” the Health and Family Welfare Department of Punjab is dedicated to delivering curative, preventive, and promotive healthcare services. A healthy population is the backbone of any nation, and investing in people’s health means building a stronger and more productive society.

Healthcare Infrastructure in Punjab

The Health and Family Welfare Department operates through a well-structured network of medical institutions that includes sub-centers, clinics, primary health centers, community health centers, district hospitals, and government medical and dental colleges. The focus is to provide accessible and affordable healthcare to every corner of the state.

Primary Healthcare

In rural areas, primary healthcare is provided through an extensive network:

  • Sub-Centers (2950): One for every 5,000 people
  • Subsidiary Health Centers / Dispensaries / Clinics (1336): One for every 10,000 people
  • Primary Health Centers (PHCs) (395): One for every 30,000 people
  • Community Health Centers (CHCs) (129): One for every 1,00,000 people

Additionally, under the Alternative Health Care Delivery System, 1187 rural dispensaries have been handed over to the Department of Rural Development and Panchayats. Rural Medical Officers appointed by Zila Parishads provide medical services in these centers.

To promote AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy), Punjab also has:

  • 507 Ayurvedic/Unani dispensaries
  • 17 Ayurvedic Health Centers
  • 5 Ayurvedic Hospitals
  • 1 Government Ayurvedic College in Patiala
  • 107 Homoeopathic dispensaries

Several national and state health programs are actively running in the state, targeting major public health issues like malaria, tuberculosis, blindness, leprosy, and AIDS, all of which have been successfully tackled through organized efforts.

Secondary Healthcare

Community Health Centers (CHCs) in rural areas act as the first level of referral care, while Sub-Divisional and District Hospitals offer more specialized services as part of the secondary healthcare system. These facilities provide critical support to primary healthcare institutions, offering more advanced treatment and expert care.

Together, primary and secondary healthcare systems form a robust, district-based health network, ensuring continuous care from the grassroots level to more advanced services.

Tertiary Healthcare

Tertiary-level services in Punjab are provided through specialized hospitals and those attached to the State’s medical colleges. These institutions not only support the overall healthcare system but also contribute to medical research and training future healthcare professionals to serve the state better.

Family Planning Services

To support family welfare, especially in urban areas, the state runs:

  • 23 Urban Family Planning Centers
  • 64 Urban Revamping Centers
  • 52 Post-Partum Units

These centers focus on reproductive health, family planning education, and post-natal care.
